OUR COMPETITION WINNER FROM THE FESTIVAL OF SPEED;
My holiday in a VW Campervan from BMVS
It was a great surprise to receive a phone call from Oli at BMVS with the news that I had won a week’s use of a BMVS Campervan. This would give me the opportunity to go touring in this country which I am keen on. It emerged that I would be travelling alone but as I am used to this it did not bother me at all. At last I could take in the VSCC Welsh Weekend based in Presteigne and then carry on exploring.
And so it turned out. I was welcomed to BMVS at Bognor by Oli and Dean who proceeded to demonstrate the many facilities in the VW California Campervan, and to make everything as easy as possible for me. The power roof, the cooker, sink, and fridge were all very convenient, and made a comfortable living area. At the end of the day, slide the seat, lower the back rest, spread the mattress, and there is your bed. The campsite facilities of awning, picnic table and chairs, and outside cooker were all produced from their hiding places, but it turned out that as I was touring I did not stay in one place long enough to take advantage of the outdoor life at a campsite.
As a newcomer to the heart of Wales I enjoyed confirming my preconceptions about the country – there was no end to the scenic hills and valleys, there were thousands and thousands of sheep on every hillside, there were rain showers every day. I must say that the VW took it all in its stride. It was a comfortable and easy vehicle to drive with plenty of power and quite economical, it was surefooted and accurate on the steep and narrow hill roads, and relaxed when cruising on main roads. I drove across the middle of Wales and reached Aberystwyth before turning south to visit old friends; I found the old castle at Cilgerran and the old goldmine dating from Roman times at Dolaucothi; and I swooped through the Brecon Beacons and marvelled at Tintern Abbey. I decided to return through Bristol to be able to view Brunel’s Suspension Bridge, and then spent an absorbing afternoon at Brunel’s greatest triumph, SS Great Britain, in the docks there.
It was a most enjoyable holiday thanks to the convenience of the VW Campervan. I am grateful to Oli Hicklin for making it possible and have no hesitation in recommending a VW Campervan from BMVS for a camping and touring holiday.
